Perspective of the Ulama in Basilan on the Celebration of Mawlid: A Case Study Analysis

Abstract:

This paper aims to assess the perspective of Ulama (Islamic Scholars) in Basilan on the celebration of Prophet Mohammad’s [PBUH] birthday. A qualitative-case study was used and respondents were selected purposely following some criteria. The findings revealed that the celebration of mawlid can be conceptualized into five (5) discussion summaries such as: Historical origins; Theological significance and legitimacy; Cultural and social dimensions; Political propaganda; and Manner of celebration.
